David Perrell has this concept of “The Magic Moment” - the perfect time to start writing about an idea. Not too early when you don’t know enough to write, and also not too late when you no longer find writing about it exciting.
I map this Magic Moment idea onto the Dunning Krueger’s curve. If our understanding of an idea moves along this (wisdom x confidence) curve, when is the perfect time to start writing?
Our instinct points to the slope of enlightenment or the plateau of sustainability when knowledge seems sufficient and confidence seems high.
The problem is, if you are like me, the more you know, the more you’ll feel the need to learn more. That is the paradox of knowledge: you’ll never know enough. As a result, you will never write if “enough” is what you are looking for.
My advice is: Write when you’re not enough. Write when you’re on top of mount stupid. Write when the excitement that comes from learning is greater than the fear of being judged.
What if you view writing as the medium to show your “stupidity” instead of your “brilliance”?
For every blogger, the best advice I can give is: Be stupid, publish, learn, and repeat. You learn so much faster by showing what you don’t know, instead of hiding it.
