[One Idea Monday] 2 biggest misconceptions I had about networking events
Stop expecting deep connections...
Akwaaba friends,

The 2 biggest misconceptions I had about Networking events are:
1. To expect a deep connection in an environment designed for other purposes.
In a networking event, the goal is NOT to deeply connect with someone. Accept this.
The goal is to find just 1 point of connection - One Touch Point - that you have in common with another person. It could be a mutual interest/ phase of life/ problem/ aspiration/ curiosity…
The key is you only need 1. Establish 1 bond at the event, exchange contacts, and strengthen it (if you want to) in the future.
2. To think that I need to show everything about myself in 1 elevator pitch (30 seconds).
Given what you know about the One Touch Point rule, you should NOT have only 1 elevator pitch. Instead, you should have multiple pitches, tailored to your different identities.
For example, I have 4 elevator pitches:
About the creator economy, for my identity as a blogger
About startups, for my identity as an entrepreneur
About education, for my identity as an educator
About brain drain, for my identity as an educational refugee
When I first meet someone, based on what they say they do (because I always ask questions first), I will pull out the pitch with the most potential for connection.
In conclusion
Accept that networking events are not created for deep connection. They are created for people with One Touch Point to start a conversation later.
In order to quickly establish One Touch Point with someone, you need to prepare Multiple Elevator Pitches.

This is from a great article I read this week about Jerry Seinfeld - an innovator, comedian, and micromanager.
“What am I really sick of?” is where innovation begins. ~ Jerry Seinfeld
