In this essay titled “Imitate, then Innovate”, David Perell talks about one of the most frowned upon topics in writing, or creating by and large: originality.
The idea is this: Instead of trying to not sound like a writer(s) you like, you should do the exact opposite. Binge-read your favorite writers and shamelessly copy their style. Do this well and often enough, the greatest bits of their craft will spill over your writing.
I did this with my daily blogging challenge, copying Seth Godin’s punchy style. And after 2 months, I have developed my own punchy style that you are now reading.
The first step to develop originality is to imitate shamelessly. The second step is to innovate.
