on retiring at 30
Reminder to self: retiring in your 30s is not the measurement of success.
The media makes us crave not only financial successes, but also quick financial successes. So many people in my circle grow up asking “HOW can I retire in my 30s?”, or “What’s the quickest path to get there?” And the moment we know a path, we jump straight in.
But we forget to ask “WHY do I want to retire in my 30s?” and “WHAT IF I don’t?”
WHAT IF the goal isn’t to retire at 35, but to go to work until 80 and feel inspired every single day?
This is written for my mom - the woman turning 52 this year who absolutely loves her part-time job. I want to be able to talk about my work with the level of joy and fulfillment my mom has whenever she talks about hers.
My mom is far from the richest person I know. But she is, without a doubt, the happiest person when talking about her work. She taught me that work fulfillment is the most important thing to affect my happiness.
Because after all, most of us will work for a very long time, so might as well choose something that you love.
