The biggest typhoon in 30 years hit my home (Northern Vietnam) last Sunday.
As of this writing:
326 people have died or gone missing
54,000 homes have been flooded
400,000 households are suffering from water shortages
569 schools closed
These may sound like arbitrary numbers to you, but my heart ached like a million bee stings when I wrote these lines.
I know many friends whose homes have been flooded, or completely torn down because of this disaster. I cried watching the news of people being buried in landslides every day.
I have been paralyzed over the past few days, trying to process what was happening, and what I could do to help alleviate this suffering.
I have donated to a few organizations I trust. But I figured the best resource I have to contribute is access to international support.
The best resource I have to contribute is access to international support.
So I’m writing this, hoping that you would seriously consider giving to Vietnam, to help hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese people.
1 life is too many. A donation of as little as:
$20 will purchase a packet of food for a family.
$30 will give emergency shelter for a week.
$50 gives a week of food and shelter through the crisis. (*)
Below is information about 2 organizations I trust and how to donate.
Blue Dragon Foundation
They’re on the ground supporting families being affected (mostly in Hanoi), and have been around for over 20 years. Super transparent. I receive an email update a few hours after my donation.
You’ll receive a receipt as well if you donate on their website.
Vietnamese Emergency Relief Team
This is basically the Vietnamese Government. Given the scale of this problem, I think this might be the most effective way to give.
The government has the resources and expertise to go to the most remote areas - which not many NGOs can do right now.
