It is important to know history if you are trying to make a change. Whatever it is that you are working on, someone from somewhere, at some point has done something similar.
Your job is not to reinvent the wheel. Your job is to put that wheel in a car, a plane, or make better wheels.
Your job is to do good market and history research, be inspired, build on what great people have created, and fulfill the need they have missed.
I don't want to see another fundraising project to "raise the awareness of people about X". With X being the most common catchphrase you can think of - "sexism", "mental health", "cyberbullying"...
Don't start a project because it is "trendy".
Start one because you have done your research. Start one because there is a problem that no one is solving or no one is solving it well enough. Start one because you are really passionate about that problem.
